In the eternal conflict of gods and demons, fortunes could often turn. After a crushing defeat the gods were counseled to make peace with the demons and jointly engage in procuring the nectar for immortality. They all came together to churn it out from the ocean. A mountain formed the churning rod and a great snake from the heavens was the churning rope. When at last the nectar came out, the gods tricked the demons into yielding possession of nectar to them.
